2022 Leading Energy Efficient Builder: Affordable Homes of South Texas

Affordable Homes of South Texas (AHSTI), a 501c3 non-profit Corporation, is dedicated to providing homeownership opportunities, including bi-lingual homeownership counseling and education, for low-income residents in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas.

The organization has been a long-time market leader in the housing industry through building homes of superior quality and energy efficiency. AHSTI is committed to building high performance homes—not just because they take pride in building to the highest standards but because they understand that the money saved on utilities has a huge positive impact on the low-income market they serve.

And because the true cost of a home includes the cost of owning a home, an AHSTI home—in addition to consuming less energy—is built to require lower maintenance and provide long-term durability and comfort. The energy efficiency and construction standards, when combined with AHSTI’s homebuyer education, ensure that homeowners will be successful in keeping their homes once they achieve their dream of home ownership.

In addition to being recognized by BUILT TO SAVE® for certifying the most homes in the BUILT TO SAVE® program for a non-profit builder in 2021, AHSTI was also recognized by   the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET), a recognized national standards-making entity for building energy efficiency rating and certification systems in the United States.

RESNET recognized 12 builders in the U.S. who are leading the path to net-zero homes in 2021 with the lowest average HERS® (Home Energy Rating System) index scores. The average HERS score of the 313,153 homes that received HERS scores in 2021 was 58. RESNET reviewed all the homes that received HERS scores and recognized 12 builders who built over 50 homes and had the lowest average HERS scores. Included on their list of 12 was AHSTI, whose average HERS score was 47.5, far below the national average.
